Conform 25fps to 23.976fps - Miranda - 06.08.2021

Is there an option to conform (slightly slow down) 25 fps to 23.976 fps?

I see speed change options, but I am unsure which will do this correctly.

Depends on how you want to do it:
  • 'Filtering->Speed Change->Change speed': simply change the playback speed, rame count stays the same (this will also require speed adjustment for audio)
  • 'Filtering->Speed Change->Scale output frame rate': statically drop frames (no audio speed adjustment)
  • 'Filtering->Vapoursynth/Avisynth->Frame->Reduction->sRestore': drop frames while preferably dropping frames with ghosting
Simply changing the playback speed can also be done while video processing is set to 'passthrough' through "Muxing->Overwrite->Frame rate".

out of curiosity: Why?

I tried Filtering -> Speed Change -> Change Speed

This seems to work quite well. However, is there a way to also include the DVD-R audio as part of the speed changed ProRes export?

Audio is handled speparately in Hybrid.
Audio needs to be reencoded for speed change, use "Audio->Base->Audio Encoding Options->Filtering->Speed change" speed changes.

A lot of 24fps film content on DVDs is simply conformed to 25fps and audio is stretched. So i guess the main idea here to conform it back to 24 original fps and stretch audio?

But i guess in most cases it may not worth and this is why:
- 24 vs 25 fps difference is near invisible.
- It is usually a high amount of risk that not only 24-to-25fps conform but additional unusual artifacts may present in DVD.
-It is unknown if audio pitch was removed during stretching or not, so stretching it back may add additional audio problems.
- If audio on DVD is already compressed - editing and stretching it is a bad idea.
- DVD format is evil, so if possible always search for modern HD/bluray release version that use native 24fps, progressive formal, better compression, more details and better dynamic range because rescanned from film master on modern 2K or 4K film scanners.

It's for a collection of old video interview clips which need to be edited into a 1080p / 23.976 feature documentary for Blu-ray release.

Video - passthrough
Muxing->Overwrite->Frame rate set to 23.976

Audio - custom
Audio->Base->Audio Encoding Options->Filtering->Speed change set from 25 to to 23.976
Enable Pitch correction.
Codec - PCM

Don't forget that in Hybrid first of all you need to set audio settings, then delete old audio job, and then add new audio job to use those adjusted settings.

Use last dev. version, because it was a global bug with passthrough retiming in earlier versions discussed here https://forum.selur.net/thread-525-post-12932.html#pid12932
