Suspect that De-interlace filters not getting correct results - davebtw - 19.09.2025

I am using Hybrid version 2025.07.21.1.  I am attempting to de-interlace some ripped DVD files.  My attempts have failed due to audio/video sync being way off.  I use MakeMKV mostly but also Dumbfab.  When loading a file into Hybrid it does not detect the file as telecine but it does state top Field First.

QTGMC then causes significant A/V displacement.  All files have Dolby AC-3 audio I wish to retain so I set the tool to Passthrough for audio.

Mediainfo for the files ripped with MakeMKV says progressive scan with Top Field First.

Files ripped with DumbFab direct copy say Progressive with 2:3 Pulldown.

My experience is this combination of metadata causes this problem on may files dipped from DVDs. I suspect that these files really are 2:3 pulldown but so far have not successfully been able to remove that with Hybrid.

Some of the forum posts and suggestions have been tried, but many of the settings for TVITC are not shown on my version of Hybrid so I am stuck. I have not posted a file below as they are too large to upload and I do not want to damage the file in any way with a editor.

Please Advise!

Thanks,

RE: Suspect that De-interlace filters not getting correct results - davebtw - 20.09.2025

In reading through many posts on the topics of 2:3 pulldown, duplicate frames, telecine detection, etc. I am learning but still do not have solution.  Our Host has posted many times on this topic with the summary that there is not one solution that always works for files like this.  But I still have hope that I can make things work to get the best quality without a lot of compromise.

I have even tried to use Davinci Resolved to remove the 2:3 pulldown, but so far no luck there.  I am no expert in Vaporsynth or Avisynth for sure, but I will keep trying.  Any help that can be given will be greatly appreciated.

No real details (read sticky), no sample,... Dodgy
A few things that might help:
a. If the source was created with a "2:3 pulldown" it's telecined. read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-two_pull_down
b. If your source is detected as something else, it's because it's flagged as something else, so you need to let Hybrid know what the source is. Use 'Filtering->(De-)Interlace/Telecine->Overwrite input scan type to' to do that.
c. Hybrid has a few workarounds for MakeMKV created files, assuming the source is flagged as created by MakeMKV.
d. I can't remember to have removed any TIVTC setting in the last 10 years or so, so I doubt that a setting got removed.

RE: Suspect that De-interlace filters not getting correct results - davebtw - 20.09.2025

Hello,

Thanks for the information.  I have now ripped the DVD with a different tool and It does now show up as telecine (soft) when loaded into Hybrid.

As for your comment  "d. I can't remember to have removed any TIVTC setting in the last 10 years or so, so I doubt that a setting got removed."

I believe you.  I just couldn't find it which is my fault.

I have attached two screen captures showing how Hybrid detects this new file, and what the filter tab looks like.

I have also posted the actual file  to my dropbox location as it is too large to upload.  The original file which is .VOB format and the output of Hybrid encoding in H.265 but still has AV sync issue.

Please let me know if there is anything else you need to help.

Thank you very much for your time.  I have been using Hybrid for several months now and I have had great success with it up until now.

Regards,

Telecine (soft) can either be handled with TIVTC or if you have an NVIDIA card and allow Hybrid to use DGDecNV through using DGDecNV.

I can reproduce the sync problem and I know where the problem is:
MediaInfo reports:
Delay : 280.633333 Delay : 281 ms Delay : 281 ms Delay : 281 ms Delay : 00:00:00.281 Delay : 00:00:00.281 Delay, origin : Container Delay, origin : Container Delay relative to video : 0 Delay relative to video : 00:00:00.000 Delay relative to video : 00:00:00.000
for the audio.
Since 'Delay relative to video' is 0 Hybrid assumes there is no delay.
Telling Hybrid to use 281ms as delay, seems to fix the sync issue for me.

This is the first time I see a file where someone delayed both audio&video,....

=> adjusting the delay should fix the problem for you too. (you could remux your file with the delay to fix the problem on the already encoded file)
Strange that MakeMKV didn't fix this when remuxing.

Thanks very much.  I am also not looking at other disc in the series and they are also different but not in the same way.  At least MakeMKV is handling them differently.

Just Weird!  I shall report back after the weekend.

RE: Suspect that De-interlace filters not getting correct results - davebtw - 22.09.2025

Hello,

Please forgive my my newbie questions.

1-  Where in Hybrid can I put in the 281 msec delay?
2-  It appears that only the first file in my 22 disc collection of this TV Series has this problem.  Others are ripping just fine, except that these discs were made during the era when Warner Brothers made discs that self destruct over time.  I have two discs out of the 6 for season one, and I am going to have to either get Warner Brothers to replace them or purchase a new set.  All of this so I can put the show on Plex.

I would really like to get this first file to work with your help and update my learning.

I have tried MKVToolNix to add the delay to the AC-3 track before sending the file to Hybrid.  Will that work?  OR should I make the change in Hybrid itself?  Or should I try to add the delay to the file after it has gone through Hybrid?

Thanks,

-david BTW

P.S.  Also did you create the listings above.  Is that Mediainfo?  I must not have mine setup like yours.

In the Audio-tab.

No clue what will happen to the delay flags when mkvtoolnix processes such files.
I only mentioned mkvtoolnix so you can add the delay to already processed files.
So either add the delay in Hybrid or afterwards.
