For me, mainly when I want to use AviSynth plugins and filters that don't have working 64-bit equivalents, such as (what I can think of off the top of my head):
If you want to use classic Avisynth plugins from the 2000s and 2010s, you need Avisynth 32, because many of these plugins were hand-optimized with MMX/SSE assembly instructions using 32-bit calling conventions. Porting these to x64 requires re-writing the assembly in x64-compatible NASM/MASM or intrinsics, or rewriting in pure C/C++, but most importantly, actually having access to the source code. (Many of these plugins were released as closed-source binaries, making any port impossible without complete reverse engineering, which I am just now hearing may be possible with AI?
)
- amDCT.dll
- SplineResize.dll
- Toon-v1.1.dll
- Deen.dll / deen1b1.dll
- DeCrawl.dll
- ChannelMixer.dll
- NoiseGenerator.dll
- ColorBalance.dll
- BucketMedian.dll
