Esxi is essentially free for up to i think 6-8 cores.
The one i use is esxi 6.7u3 and u need 2 usbs. One for the esxi installer and rhe other for it to be installed on.
For getting mac to work it requires running a script. I can walk u thru that part. Then u upload an .iso version of catalina (or whatever os you want to work on) hybrid seems to be working on mojave, but most mac users tend to update their os every year so a catalina build would be awesome.
The nice thing about esxi (doesnt require u buying a mac) can use pretty much any intel pc i think ryzen is ok too.
