Help with correctlyt upscaling with Real-ESRGAN.
#1
Good morning. I’m after a bit of guidance please,
I have a project underway, scaling up DVD files to approximately Blu-Ray resolution. The workflow I’m using is:
·         Deinterlacing if necessary (QTGMC, Neo),
·         Colour space management (BT601 to 709),
·         Upscaling using Real-ESRGAN (x2plus model), resizing to 1140 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080 (depending upon the original file being 4:3 or 16:9,
·         Finishing with a light CAS sharpen.
I’m comfortable selecting all of these & setting them up in Hybrid. Once bedded in, I’ll check the filter order & rearrange to suit, if necessary.
However, I’m struggling getting Real-ESRGAN working properly. I’m going in through vapoursynth/Frames. When I toggle on Upscale then select Real_ESRGAN and the x2Plus model and leave the resizer box on the default Spline option, if I go back to the Resize option I see that has been turned on by Hybrid, I’ll turn it off then run job.
Real-ESRGAN appears to be running, the GPU being at 100% & the VRAM running close to it’s full size (I’ve adjusted the batch size to get that up), yet the output file resolution is the same as the input resolution. If I turn on Resize & set the resolution appropriately, selecting the Lancros model, then rerun the job, the GPU runs correctly again and the output resolution is now what I’d selected in Resize.
I’d assumed that Resize is independent of the Upscaling models and was intending to use it for a final rescale after I’d run Real-ESRGAN which I’d expect to natively double the resolution size on x2Plus.
Is that assumption correct, or am I wrong, and Resize is used for the output size from the Real-ESRGAN upscale?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards
Mike.

Under 'Crop/Resize->Base->Resize->Picture resize' you enable whether resizing should take place what the resize resolution should be.
Under Filtering->Vapoursynth->Frame->Resize you can overwrite the 'Crop/Resize->Base->Resize->Picture resize->Resize method'.
=>
a. if 'Crop/Resize->Base->Resize' is disabled, 'Filtering->Vapoursynth->Frame->Resize' has no effect
b. the resolution after resizing the one selected under 'Crop/Resize->Base->Resize->Picture resize'
After applying RealESRGAN&co, Hybrid will adjust the resolution to the value under 'Crop/Resize->Base->Resize->Picture resize'.
Best look at the generated script using the Vapoursynth Script View if you are unsure what is happening.

Sorry to bug you again Selur.
Where abouts do I find the script generated, so I can open it in VS Viewer? I'm assuming in a temporary folder, but haven't been able to find it.

1 => Script View, shows the script
2 => Preview Shows the Script Preview
see: attached image
While the script exists it's in the temp folder that is specified under Config->Path.
If the Preview is open, you can also open vsViewer through the tools menu entry (top of Hybrid) to open it in a separate vsViewer instance.
