[BUG] Deep Remaster and Deep Reference modes both crash; ColorMnet reference mode is OK
#1
I have a problem with the Deep Remaster and Deep Reference modes; They both crash, but the ColorMNet does work correctly with reference frames.
It happens in step04_muxing: "CRASHED creating mp4 files with mp4box". See attached screenshot. No problem in the ColorMnet reference mode (Method: "RF same as video").
I have two PC's with the same crash problem. Is it maybe caused by improper SETUP whereby the Vapoursyth colorizer overwrites some of the already installed HAVC files?
Should the colorization filter override these pre-existing files or not?

No debug output => nothing I can say.
Since I'll be offline the next few days, best ask here => https://forum.selur.net/thread-3595.html maybe Dan64 can help.

Angel No debug output, nothing I can say about it, maybe Dan64 can help. Wild guess would be that you are running out of vram,...

Sorry, but I have a number of issues with your (great) Hybrid software:

1. No idea what you mean with Debug info. It's not described in your HAVC user guide PDF.

2. I have the same problem on two PC's. My question was whether it has to do with the Setup order: I first install Hybrid and then the Vapoursynth colorizer files. During the install of Vapoursynth colorizer there is the choice between overwriting already existing Hybrid files or not. I have a feeling that the crash is related to that?

3. Also: Are you really still supporting Deep Remaster and Deep Reference or is now all your attention going to ColorMnet?

4. ColorMnet is not bad but colorization is not very crispy and small objects like medals on uniforms that are wonderfully colorized in the reference frame are simply ignored by the filter!
I have tried everything to improve that, but no success. My reference frames have much higher colorization quality than the corresponding frames after using the colorizer.
As I recall, Deep Reference Frames on Github did do a better job on such small details, but the GitHub setup is clumsy and only at 732 x 432 resolution (and max. 999 frames).

5. Pity you can't be contacted by e-mail.

6. Please improve the saving of the settings in HAVC. Every time having to set up Reference-, Output- and Input- folders, colorization modes, the constant rate 1-pass (in stead of 2-pass: why?), the AVC to 4.2. in stead of 5.1 (under X264) and other stuff, is not very pleasing if I may say so. Every time I start up Hybrid I have to re-set a dozen things...
It would be so much better if HAVC remembers ALL the last settings. A rather easy update, I would think.

7. Hybrid frequently disappears from the Windows Taskbar and is then hidden in the clusters of lesser used apps (under the "^" button). Kindly improve that.

8. Are you contemplating on improving the UI? That would be nice. Currently it is rather nerdy if I may say so.

Keep up the good work! I like Hybrid very much, but there is room for improvement. I hope you don't mind my feedback. See my Rick88888888 Youtube channel.

HAVC is not from me but Dan64, read the sticky for how to create a debug output.

Using Hybrid with the torch-add-on which includes HAVC, would require you to:
a. install Hybrid
b. delete the Hybrid\64bit\Vapoursynth-folder
c. extracting the torch-add-on into the 64bit folder, which will create a new Vapoursynth folder
I doubt the crash is related to that.

regarding 3.&4.: You have to ask Dan64 about that.
Dan64 is the author and maintainer of HAVC.

Not sure who you want to contact, me or Dan64, but I guess like me Dan64 probably is happy about not answering support requests via e-mail.

reading [INFO] About profiles and saving settings,.... should help.

You would have to ask Microsoft for this. This is not something Hybrid could change without administrator rights.
(normally simply dragging the icon into the system tray should tell Windows to keep it there)

Quote:8. Are you contemplating on improving the UI? That would be nice. Currently it is rather nerdy if I may say so.
Not really, since I'm happy with the user interface as it is.
Quote:Hybrid is intended for advanced users. It's not intended to be a tool used by everyone. It's not intended to please amateurs who need a wizard-like interface.. If you don't know the basics about containers, video formats, etc. Hybrid is not meant for you.
So, if you have suggestions, I'm happy to hear them, but don't expect me to discuss in length why I won't implement them.

Thank you very much. Having to delete the Vapoursynth folder before installing the colorizer stuff is not described in the HAVC User Guide PDF.
Instructions how and what to do need to be improved. I am not an amateur but ICT professional.
Scrolling through the comments it seems not many people are using the video colorizer modes. There is hardly any useful debate about it.
I hope somebody will develop better video tools on the basis of AI diffusion technology (alike Topaz Starlight/ Astra).

Below are two files that show my reference frame versus what the Vapoursynth colorizer produces (one frame difference): disappointing.

Information and Communications Technology is a broad field, so that doesn't say much, but if you are confident that is good enough for me.

The read me of the torch add-on does state:
Quote:Installation of 'torch'-addon
  • Delete old Hybrid/64bit/Vapoursynth-folder.
  • Extract the torch-addon into your Hybrid/64bit-folder.
  • Extract the vsgan_models into your Hybrid/64bit-folder. (belongs to vsgan which comes with the torch addon)

I send Dan64 a pm, so he might read this thread and adjust his user guide.

Yes, there are not many folks that try to colorize stuff. Smile

Dan64 is looking into using Stable Diffusion through comfyUI (see: https://forum.selur.net/thread-4287.html), but at least to me, it seems way too slow to be useful atm. But fingers crossed. Smile

Your reference frames seems to be produced using a DiT model. But keep in mind that during the colorization process will be kept the resolution and grain of the original B&W frame, not the one of the reference frame. I recently started to do some experiment using the DiT models as described in my recent post: #5

I know that ColorMNet does not apply perfectly the colors, to obtain this result you have to check the box Vivid and provide very frequent reference frames (at least a key frame every 20 frames) as reported in this post: #1.268. ColorMNet does not store the full reference frames, but in order to reduce the memory usage it keep only the most relevant pixels, this is by design and I cannot change it. But providing a key reference frame every 20 for me is not practical. Recently I colorized using a DiT model a film with 138687 frames, providing a colored reference frame every 20, imply to colorize about 6934 frames. Given that to colorize a frame with a DiT model in my case are necessary 12sec, the colorization of 6934 will require about 23h, too much for me. Moreover even the frames colored with DiT models are affected by color instability, using ColorMNet with Vivid unchecked (set to False) will allow to mitigate this problem, since ColorMNet will try to keep the color consistency across the frames and the time. So if you have a lot of reference frames with consistent and stable colors, you can use Deep-Exemplar or Deep-Remaster, otherwise the only available choice is ColorMNet (try to color a clip with and without Vivid to understand better the difference).

My experience is the exact opposite.  I consider myself an amateur (slowly advancing)
Few years ago, I wanted to repair some old videos.  I barely knew anything as far as videos, mp4, Avi, interlaced, progressive, it was all  foreign to me.  I realized that Premiere Pro, just wasn't made for it.  Whether its to Deinterlace a video, stabilize a shaky video, clean it up, fix a missing frame, etc.   First thing I picked up was using FFmpeg command, but that has its limits.  Doing some research and reading in lots of forums it appears that experts are using scripts in avisynth and vapoursynth, with incredible results.  That is a very steep learning curve, I just couldn't master it.  By accident I discovered Hybrid, a software by Selur where all these tools are built-in.  At first glance it was overwhelming, but it has everything and there is logic behind the menu and how it is setup.
I did try Topaz a couple of years back, Pre Starlight / Astra versions.  The upscaling of objects were impressive, but people faces didn't seem natural, plus it was very slow.
As for as colorization, the only tool available was DeOldify, which was slow and painful to setup locally.  Dan took it to the next level and is relentless in his pursuit for the ultimate method. The colorization seem to work better for outdoors nature scenes vs the indoors or dark scenes.
The support from Selur is incredible, frequent updates, new features and helpful guidance.  Both Selur and the many contributions of Dan, don't get enough credit.  But know this, there are many video enthusiasts like me out there and they do appreciate all you have done.
