Esxi running macos For selur
#11
Okay, first problem, I selected the passthrough of the network adapters to the host, rebooted and how I can't access the server any more. Smile
So I'll reinstall the system is what I thought, but now every time the installed reports that the processor was initialized successfully the system turns off. :/
-> looking into it ... -> okay, worked now after I turned the whole machine off and turned it on again,.. no clue why a normal reset didn't work.

Ok, sorry for delayed response was sleeping.
So you are back to being able to login?
You shouldnt need to do ethernet passthru.

We don’t need to do passthru of the ethernet adapters. Ignore that step..
Esxi will create a virtual nic for the vms.

What you need to do is create a datastore (usually a local hard drive on your system) once you Create a data store.
I believe we can upload the unlocker Script to a folder on the data store.
i can email u the link for that. It Is linux so it needs to be made a executable and then run all via ssh.

check out Part 1 in this video now

Part 2 of the video

Unlocker script mentioned in video i mentioned above, that is key to installing mac otherwise it will run in a bootloop never starting.

https://github.com/benevo/esxi-unlocker

You may want to Install mojave or catalina (if you have enough room in your datastore for two vms you technically could install both, just need to do the process twice one for each system).

Esxi reauires an .iso of the mojave or catalina image to upload to the datastore on your esxi machine when you are ready to install .
I will find you them already made.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1...sp=sharing

The macOS Catalina ISO for VMware & VirtualBox is the latest version of macOS Catalina which is compressed, zipped, and encrypted with a password that is provided below.

Password: Geekrar.com

If above link doesnt work i got the links for catalina iso below. There are two other links one is mediafire.
https://www.geekrar.com/download-macos-c...ll-in-one/

For a mojave iso
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1...sp=sharing

Password: Geekrar.com

Once the unlocker script is run via ssh
In the esxi control screen, you can pick mac os install and you will select the catalina or mojave iso that you uploaded to the datastore.

Then you will pick hard drive size, say 100gb. Look for thin Provision for making a hard drive. That will keep the hard drive smaller with the abolity to expand as needed. You could do thick though if you want.

Okay, first question, since this is a 2xXeon E5640 system it got 2 physical quad core so thanks to hyper threading 16 logical cores.

-> What should I best use for 'CPU' and 'cores per socket' in the VM configuration? (My guess is either CPU: 16 and Cores per Socket 8 over 2 sockets or CPU: 8 and 4 cores per sockets over 2 sockets?)
(I used 'CPU: 16 and Cores per Socket 8 over 2 sockets' and started the OS, now going for the second part of the video,..)

Okay, have to redownload Mojave and upload to the vm server again since when installing it complains that the installer is broken. :/

Good question
I have a similar setup of With 2 xeon 2560v3 at 10 cores each.

and i dont exactly have a great answer, as for me it was trial by error for what worked best, and also how many vms i wanted to run at once.

so if you wanna run 2 vms at once you would do 8 sockets and 1 core or you could do 4 Sockets and 2 core each. If you are doing just one vm then 16 sockets 1 core each would work. Or 8 sockets 2 core each.
The big deal comes where there is a setting that says “scheduling Affinity” this is the hyper threading section. I literally put the max number it suggested which for me was 40.

sorry that may not be the best answer. But i originally was using handbrake and it said it used a max of 8 cores so i chose 8, but i know vapoursynth can use so much more.

you could try one setting and pick something in hybrid to encode with ultra placebo settings  on everything. And see which way produces faster fps encoding.

Okay, not that important.
I'll stick with the current choice one the download is finished,... (hoping that it's not a problem with the iso file)
