btw. seems can't make new builds since vmware wracked the vm.
I shutdown the VM, made a snapshot and then only got that the vmdk file was damaged.
So reverted the snapshot, but the issue is sill there.
-> seems like I would have to setup mac os anew. :/

Okay,I
- deleted the VM.
- created a new VM
- started the Vm using the Mojave Iso
- created a new partition (afs case sensitive)
- started the installation
- installed VMTools
- updated to 10.14.6
- started the update to Catalina
Problem is after the download is finished, the installation doesn't start but jumps back to before the download and shows 'null' as progress and one can restart the update again with 'Upgrade Now', but that doesn't helpt either.
-> @ Adamcarter: any idea?

Okay, using the app store and triggering the installation seems to work,...

Can't suggest anything about VMtools, but in macOS you probably may need to turn off Gatekeeper again (Allow install apps from unidentified developers) by typing in Terminal:
sudo spctl --master-disable
And it is better to disable Gatekeeper turning back on automatically after 30 days by typing in Terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security GKAutoRearm -bool NO
Sorry selur,i didn’t see these messages.
Are you back up and running? Let me know.
I havent used snapshots. I probably should.

Got it working by going through the appstore instead of the system update menu.

@Adamcarter: Do you have any experience with the snapshow option of vmware?
I'd like to use it, but I'm a bit scared that it (again) wrecks my image.
