Did a quick test with 'realsr-general' and a sd source: no
But, Yes, it did help with other models. (using VSGAN, VSMLRT)
I rarely use RealESRGAN or other machine learning upscalers, since doing ml based denoising and restoration and then upscaling with nnedi3 usually gives me better results.
=> test it for yourself. Dependent on the source, the model used the other settings you might get different results.
Might be that it doesn't help with RealESRGAN at all, or even hurt. Smile

I've guessed as much..  uhuh.. same here..

Ofcourse, i only apply upscaling to SD content.. It's doesn't make sense to me to upscale already FHD content.. even further.. in the latter case using simple sharpening techniques, and denoisers does a nice job.. imo..

Vsgan, vsmlrt..all other upscalers are bad compared to ESRgan imo.. !

But it's interesting you yield better results than ESRgan using denoising & restore followed by upscaling..
and by using NNEDI3 ?  ← ThAt doesn't do a thing for me...  Using the resizer at the resizer base section of hybrid yields pretty much the same results... and NNEDI3 or any other resizer (except for ESRgan).. doesn't improves that a bit ... not even a litle  Confused !

Can you give me an example of wich filters you use in what order / queue ?
Anyway, is the filter order by default set right in hybrid ? when using denoisers, sharpening etc .. ? Anyway, i've played with that a bit, and i don't see any noticeable difference though..

I'm eager to know what the results would be using your combo on my dvd collection ..

There are also users which upscale 1080p to 2160p.

You don't want to use proper terminology. Angry
There are tons of ESRGAN models that can be used with VSGAN and VSMLRT: https://openmodeldb.info/?q=ESRGAN
ESRGAN is the type of the Generative Adversarial Network. Sad

I could, but I will not, since it would not make sense to do that.
I change the filter settings depending on the source. Depending on the source I apply different filters in different orders, masked and only on specific section of a source.

Somehow i knew you would mention 1080p > 4K upscaling..
Hence why i wrote, the use a selection of denoise/sharpening filters do just that..  Just like you yield better results using that combo over esrGan, like you've said .. right?

A. that's because i wos refering to "Resizers" not models..?  Last time i checked, VSGAN is STILL a resizer, is it not  Confused ?

Granted, you have your Majesty Sir Selur.. and A random Seller... the one is your nick name, the other is not  Big Grin
I GET IT ALREADY  Angry  ..

However, you can be both... → Selur can be a Snake oil Seller  L Big Grin L

now.. in your humble opinion.. wich models on that page are the better SD upscalers and as fast if not faster than ESRgan ?

Example SD source 720*576/progressive 25fps, 16/9 DAR → Live Action (no anime / manga / cgi etc..)  .. simple enough . NO ?

You do not want to understand what I write, do you?

Aside from that your source probably does not have tons of flat areas and sharp edges, that does not say much.

RealESRGAN often looks to plastic for my tase on normal content,

if you search for RealESRGAN comparisions over at imgsli.com (google:

), you can also find some comparisons like https://imgsli.com/MTMxNzk0/4/1

How much effort is it to write down a few settings  Huh
Don't knock it until you've tried it..

Btw, let me be the judge of that ↑ .. iam willing to put the most effort in it..  Dodgy

True, ESRgan depending on wich settings, can look like thin foil !!  But my output results don't look near as bad as in that example from that link you've posted fortunately!!
That plastic look is particular noticeable in wide viewed / zoomed out scenes with too strong settings ..

But with the right settings, you have to look and search very carefull to spot it ..

For example: my results

After image:

Here's an slide for beter comparison ↓

Now, does that look plastic to you Huh ?
