AV1 HDR encoding not possible with Nvenc?
#1
Question
I have been using Hybrid instead of Handbrake to encode AV1 videos using my RTX4070 as I like the fact that Hybrid allows more control of additional Nvenc  parameters than Handbrake does, but for some reason I can get Handbrake to encode a hdr video as hdr whereas with Hybrid it does not retain any data showing it is HDR and I am unsure why.

Is there an obvious setting I have missed somewhere?

I would really like to encode my hdr videos in Hybrid as I prefer it to Handbrake. I have searched various forums, and googled extensively, but have not found a solution. Or perhaps there is a way to add in the data using mkvtoolnix or something similar as I have the original HDR video created from MakeMKV (these are encodes of videos I own as I like to have digital copies as back up), so in theory, as I kept the same frame rate as the originals, would I be able to use hdr data from the original videos header?

I imagine it must be possible, as Handbrake is definitely encoding a hdr video as hdr video and doing so using the gpu, I just don't seem to have found a way yet to do this outside of that.

Thank you for any help in figuring out a solution to this,

No clue about handbrake. I don't use it, so any reference to it doesn't hold useful information to me.
No, atm. Hybrid does not allow configuring HDR signaling through "NVEnc->Misc->HDR Signaling", since until recently NVEncC didn't support it and I haven't found time to look into it. (One could add the signaling at container level when using mkv through Config->MKV Tagging->VUI.)

Huh What's the point of using HDR? does your monitor(screen) support HDR display? if not, then it's a waste of 'Load and 'Opportunity'...

@humanoid86: If your monitor does not support HDR, but you plan to buy one that does later, you could encode with HDR metadata and do HDR->SDR during playback atm. and thus save encoding the content once for your current monitor and again for your new monitor.

All over the World - all SDR content

and where is HDR used? at home, in the basement?

Depending on where you live, HDR is available through:
  • TV Stations,
  • in cinemas,
  • HDR Blu-rays,
  • and self created content.
Sure, it's not as widely spread as SDR content, but it's not that rate.
Also, even if it was rare, that would be no reason to not use it.

Thank you, I will look into adding it in a way  mentioned as I have quite a few films I would like to retain the hdr of while encoding in AV1 and Hybrid is a great piece of software to use, thank you again,

These conditions were discussed approximately 20 years ago. it seems - IMHO

Uploaded a new dev version which allows hdr signaling with av1.
(dev versions are in the 'experimental'-folder of my GoogleDrive linked on the download page)

Thank you, I have used it to encode hdr video and it works great. I didn't have a dolby vision rpu file to use but it encoder and shows as hdr in media info and works very well.

I was not expecting a dev update with it added so that's made my day as it was a nice surprise and very much appreciated, thank you again,

David
