It may be downloading drivers

i noticed the link i sent you above the file is small 3 mb
but i think the vmtools drivers are closer to 500 megs

so maybe if it happens again just let it run

Okay, downloading Catalina,.... will install VM tools afterwards, should I try the version from the link again or do you have a version which definitly works?

Okay, small update:
Upgrade to Catalina run without a problem.
Installing VMware Tools worked.
-> going to bed now
